OPERA
The wells of human ambition. Verdi felt a kind of obsessive attraction to Shakespeare. The first time he tackled Shakespeare was in 1847 (Macbeth), during his Stakhanovite years ‘in the galleys’. The composer broke away from the dogmas of the opera of his time. He did not want those conventions to soften the tragic dimension of the work, one of the darkest and most heart-rending X-rays of ambition in the history of literature. Elena Barbalich, director of this production premiered at the São Carlos National Theatre in Lisbon, assumes the psychological complexity of the Shakespearean characters. Her vision is not clear-cut: there are no goodies or baddies. The existing nuances between the two poles are infinite and the voluble weakness of the human soul is situated between them. Like Lady Macbeth, instigator of the bloody rise of her husband to the throne.
