Così fan tutte, W. A. Mozart

XXXI Opera and ballet season

A precedent to partner-swapping. This is yet another operatic masterpiece by Mozart. Cosi fan tutte closes the trilogy of operas composed by the genius of Salzburg in partnership with Lorenzo da Ponte, following Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni. The plot follows an almost arithmetic pattern: the philosopher Don Alfonso bets Ferrando and Guglielmo that their girlfriends will end up deceiving them. After putting on disguises, both officers try to woo the beloved of the other to check whether this is so. The partner-swapping prospers, confirming the fickleness of these women. However, it should be borne in mind that the men acted as ‘agents provocateurs’. The ‘gender’ debate thus continues to be open to discussion. In this version commissioned by Claudio Abbado, Mario Martone enhances Mozart’s immense talent as a composer through his staging of the opera. About this, there is no debate, however!
