DRAMA Joanna “the Lucid”. Joanna of Castile will always be burdened with the nickname ‘the Mad’. The historical character has been reduced by the collective unconscious to a series of virtually unquestionable clichés. The most recurrent claims that her madness was the result of the slights she suffered at the hands of Philip “the Fair”. However, her psychological complexity goes beyond hearsay, as evidenced by this play premiered at La Abadía. A truly lavish theatrical threesome dismantles the hearsay to sketch a lucid, enlightened, maternal woman who was true to her conscience, to which she gave precedence over reasons of state. Ernesto Caballero, head of Spain’s Centro Dramático Nacional (“National Drama Centre” or CDN), puts his signature to a revealing monologue that Gerardo Vera stages with countless nuances, while Concha Velasco, in a state of grace as an actress, provides the character with poignant humanism.
