MUSICAL
The validity of nonconformity. Bertolt Brecht’s meeting with Kurt Weill is one of the milestones of 20th-century theatre. The Threepenny Opera was the first of their joint creative endeavours. Brecht laced his texts with nonconformity and rebelliousness, while Weill contributed ‘soundtracks’ inspired by the music that was playing in low-life Berlin. With these ingredients, they also cooked up Happy End, which Salva Bolta defined as “an entertainment, a comic play with songs narrated like a story from a noir film”. Brecht/Weill once again lashed out against capitalism and its excesses. Bolta takes up this critical baton, bringing it up-to-date and launching it against the iniquities of our time in a version that constitutes the Generalitat Valenciana’s major theatrical wager this season.
