DRAMA
Sixth gear for classical theatre. Helena Pimenta has put our classical theatre into sixth gear. In her productions for Spain’s National Classical Theatre Company, the Golden Age becomes dizzyingly dynamic: the scenes unfold with no time to blink, like in an action movie. The comparison with films is even more fitting bearing in mind the energy displayed in swashbuckling scenes. In Lope de Vega’s enduring classic El perro del hortelano (“The Dog in the Manger”), which Pilar Miró staged on the big screen, the same formula is applied to highlight the conflict suffered by Countess Diana, caught between love and honour. Her version underscores Lope’s critical, nonconformist vision without renouncing its comic potential.
