Fallen in the Battle of Genoa. It seems impossible that a single actor can evoke with documentary accuracy the mass chaos of the ‘Battle of Genoa’, waged by thousands of anti-globalization activists protesting against the 2001 G8 summit. But, thanks to his energetic physique, Oriol Pla manages to do so. His interpretation is based on the last hours of activist Carlo Giuliani before his death, the result of being shot almost point-blank by a cornered carabiniere. Barcelona’s critics anointed him Best Newcomer of 2015 for this play, which left no-one indifferent when it was staged at the Teatre Lliure. Combining journalistic reportage and socio-political reflection, this play shines light on the roots of juvenile rage against a system that is impassive to their claims.
